A DAW, also known as Digital Audio Workstation is a vital component of any home studio, but it can be inexpensive. You’ll need a good selection of them, but the first and foremost tool for making music is your DAW. A free DAW that tends to your every need may it be workflow, or any other need will be challenging to find. There are a lot of them, each with different features and limitations. 

Many of the apps that make up this list are free versions of the respected Pro DAW. These are perfect if you’re starting out as a music producer and planning on eventually buying a full-fledged DAW and just need to try a few different options. Lastly, if you’re looking for a complete production solution, consider expanding your budget a bit if you can. Some of the reputable names of DAWs on the market but we have created a list of free DAWs for you to try and enjoy.

Expand Pro Tools First: 

Expand in Pro Tools First which includes 2 basic virtual instruments and 3 UVI Workstation sample players so that it can give you access to a range of sounds, starting from beats to power chords and more. It only allows up to four tracks to be recorded simultaneously and 16 tracks can be played back at the same time, it doesn’t sound like much but remember this is the free version and you can always upgrade. Pro Tools First also comes with 23 effects and utility plugins that are great for the basic mixing process. It’s free to download and use, but you need to register with them and with iLoki as well, which takes a while. 

Waveform: 

Waveform was formerly known as Tractation has a lot of features to ten to your needs of every kind. This means that it does not have any kind of limitation regarding track limit, plugin, or constraints like other platforms of DAW. To get it, you must register. After that just choose your OS and download it. The big difference between Waveforms and all the other DAWs I’ve tried is that the workflow is very different, at least when you first open it; You have your tracks, which, like any other DAW, go from left to right, but the mixer isn’t down, as in every DAW, it’s on the right. 

Audacity: 

Audacity is the original free DAW. It is a multitrack song or audio editor which happens to be open-source as well and a recorder that works on many different operating systems. If you’re only working with audio tracks, Audacity is a fully functional free DAW solution. Audacity does not act as a sequencer of MIDI, and it may act as a drawback for it. This means there is no MIDI track to use with your virtual instruments. Plugins are used differently from Pro DAW and keeping this in it might not be the best option to install. Despite this, Audacity is an excellent free resource that is worth adding to this list. 

Cubase LE: 

Cubase LE is another solid and free DAW. This is the lite version of Steinberg’s flagship recording app, Cubase. Cubase was one of the first digital indexing apps and has been a popular DAW alternative for decades. With only a short amount of limitations, Cubase LE brings the legacy in the best form. With Cubase LE you’ll be able to record up to 16 tracks of audio and 24 virtual instrument tracks. If we talk about a bundle of recording tracks at the same time, then it provides you with the freedom of recording up to 8 tracks and libraries for its HALion sampling platform. 

Studio One Prime: 

It is thought to be the lesser version of Studio One 5 DAW which is in many scenarios much advanced. As for the lite version of the paid DAW, Studio One 5 Prime comes with some distinct advantages. Namely, it allows for unlimited tracks, unlike Ableton Live Lite, which limits you to eight. You get a complete recording interface, sampling tools, drum machine, and step sequencer. It contains a good number of plugins that will be useful over the period. Overall, it is a complete entry point into zero-cost music production, which is perfect if you happen to be an online music producer looking for the best DAW option for your home studio.

MPC Beats:

AKAI is well known for its famous MPC line of groove boxes. This free DAW is geared towards beatmakers and hip-hop producers, it is essentially a free MPC with DAW style timeline interface. It comes with some limited recording features and a handful of effects to warp and modifies any sound. It is only available for Windows with a limitation of 8 tracks and 2 audio recordings. A great option to get to creating electronic beats on our personal PC that is also free. 

Making music should not be a financial burden. So, these free recording apps are very helpful for the creators. There are a few different routes you can go here, depending on your needs, preferences, and operating system.
