Uncovering Hidden Cameras: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Privacy in Airbnbs and Hotels
A friend of mine once related to me how he discovered a hidden camera at an Airbnb where he had previously stayed. Coincidentally, he used one of the strategies we previously discussed in this post to locate the camera.
His tale is neither the first nor the last of its kind. Regrettably, there are really real hidden cameras in Airbnbs and other vacation rentals. For instance, false smoke alarms have been discovered to contain cameras. In other instances, cameras have been concealed in lightbulbs and disguised as cellphone chargers.
Although instances like these are uncommon, people continue to smuggle hidden cameras into private locations like hotels, Airbnbs, and other vacation rentals. Fortunately, there are ways to detect these cameras if this makes you anxious.
- Look for cameras: Before you settle into your Airbnb, take a quick walk-through and look for any obvious cameras. Check for things like smoke detectors or other electronics that could be cameras.
- Use a detector: You can purchase a hidden camera detector that will help you find any cameras that might be hidden in your room or rental.
- Check the listing: Make sure to read the listing thoroughly before booking. Some hosts may disclose the use of cameras in their property description or house rules.
- Communicate with the host: If you have any concerns about cameras, reach out to the host and ask if there are any on the property. If they do have cameras, ask where they are located and why they are being used.
- Cover up: If you do find cameras in your Airbnb and you are uncomfortable with them, cover them up with tape or a piece of paper. Just be sure to remove the coverings before you leave so you don’t get charged for damages.
There is no certainty that this little detector will find every hidden camera because no two cameras are alike. Although it is far from perfect, having something at all is still preferable to nothing. Also, being aware of what to look for will provide you greater piece of mind when you plan your subsequent Airbnb stay.
