What’s Good?
- Display: OnePlus never disappoints with the display feature. It is as good as 8T with a 120Hz refresh rate.
- Performance: The Snapdragon 870 is good, but heavy use may cause problems.
- Software: The Oxygen OS11 is the best to date that the company offers its users. The OnePlus will be among the first users who will have Android 12.
- Charging Speed: We do not have any complaints regarding charging speed. It offers you a 65W charger that is still the fastest.
- Metal Build: It is an exact copy of 8T. The 9R comes with a metal frame that looks premium.
- Fingerprint Sensor: The fingerprint sensor rests at the bottom of the phone in the middle, which is convenient to use.
- Price: The phone is cheaper than the 8T, which is a good move.
OnePlus’ 9R looks premium. The colors and design are both excellent. The glossy finish comes in striking colors. The camera has four lenses that look similar to 9Pro at one glance but when you look closer it shows a bit wide arrangements. The 9R does not have the biggest USP i.e. Hasselblad branding like costlier phones.
It is smaller than Oneplus 9Pro but that’s not an issue. Rest the phone is the same as the Oneplus 9 series. It does not slip away still we recommend using the phone cover provided with the box.
The 6.5inch OLED display is better than thought. It is bright on a sunny day and vibrant too. The Dolby Atmos adds a better sound. You will love listening to pop and jazz.
The processor of the OnePlus 9R is the biggest differentiator among the 9Plus series. The 9R is powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G instead of 888. It does not affect the phone’s performance, however, that phone might get a little sluggish due to heavy gaming or so. The phone does not heat up but may get warm when used for long hours.
Oneplus 9R is a sibling of Oneplus 9 but with a lesser price. Yes, this phone has four cameras 48MP main camera, a 16MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP mono depth camera. That’s a good camera setting, we must say.
The primary camera does not shoot 48MP in auto mode. It takes a second to set but amazes you with the picture detail. You can zoom in and crop pictures with no loop.
The 16MP camera does a great job even in low light and macro is good too. We missed an extra oomph with the mono camera but we know many users will get along with it. The focus of the camera is precise. The only thing is that it misses Hasselblad which makes images a bit dull. However, only the ones who have used this technology may find the difference.
The Oxygen OS is great and offers great performance. It can record in 4k @60fps with optical image stabilization.
What’s Not Good?
- Cameras: The main problem that OnePlus should address now is the camera. The colors are a bit dull.
- CPU: In the name of battery optimization CPU’s general performance slows down.
- Features: It lacks the bells of the pricier phones.
- Battery Management: It kills battery life due to background.
- Heating: The 9R sometimes becomes warm when used for long hours.
Should you buy the OnePlus 9R?
Yes, but this is a tricky question. One thing I might assure you is that for me it makes more sense than the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 8T according to price. If you don’t have a problem with missing out Hasselblad camera, it is a decent camera phone.
The OnePlus 9R is good at everything in this price range. The OnePlus allows you to get premium feature phones at half the price of branded phones also sits in the top shelf segment.
